Toyota Reportedly To Shut NUMMI In March 2010
Posted by Eric Savitz
The labor market troubles in Northern California are about to get even worse.
nummiToyota reportedly is looking to end production in March 2010 at NUMMI, the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. plant in Fremont, just across San Francisco Bay from Silicon Valley. The 5.3 million square foot facility had been a joint venture with General Motors until GM withdrew walked away as part of its bankruptcy filing. NUMMI is the largest corporate employers in Alameda County; the NUMMI web site says the plant has 5,440 employees. (The Reuters story puts the number at 4,500.)
The NUMMI site says it has 3,600 suppliers, including more than 1,000 in California; the site contends the total number of jobs supported by the NUMMI food chain is about 50,000.
According to Reuters, Japan’s Asahi Shimbum reported the planned plant shutdown on its web site. The story said Toyota has started to inform suppliers about the plan; it also said a Toyota spokesman asserted that no officiel decision had been reached.
Toyota reportedly will transfer production of its Tacoma pickup trucks to a factory in San Antonio, Texas. Production of the Corolla sedan will shift to sites in Ontario, Canada and Japan.

Reason: Posted actual article.
I remember this being the only unionized factory for Toyota had they chose to keep it in operation. Good thing they didn't.
No doubt that was one of the major factors. Toyota wants absolutely nothing to do with the UAW and considering what the unions did to Ford, GM and Chrysler; I dont blame them.

Toyota: Like other cars, only better.
The article is saying that none of this is confirmed.

I guess we'll see for real the situation of closing Fremont, I believe we discussed this somewhere on the forums. I'm surprised the Tijuana plant is not mentioned at all since that plant does make Tacomas and is quite close distance-wise from Fremont.
