**Toyota Corolla** TOP purchased vehicle after clunker trade-ins

http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2009/08...kers-vehicles/

Quote:

So far, auto buyers in the U.S. have signed contracts to trade in 358,851 clunkers for new vehicles, stimulated in large part by government rebates of up to $4,500.
AP reports that most of the trade ins have been pickups/SUVs. And what are they driving ff the lots in exchange?
1. Toyota Corolla
2. Honda Civic
3. Ford Focus
4. Toyota Camry
5. Toyota Prius
6. Hyundai Elantra
7. Ford Escape (front-wheel-drive)
8. Honda Fit
9. Nissan Versa
10. Honda CR-V (four-wheel-drive)
Interestingly, there are 3 Hondas, 2 Fords, 2 Toyotas — but no General Motors or Chryslers on the list . . .

some of those were a given, but kudos to ford for cracking the top ten with the focus and escape! it worked out for at least one domestic automaker.

YOU MEAN 3 TOYOTAS right? I could've swore the Caliber and Cobalt were on the list before, but I guess the dealers ran out of them...

The Cobalt, Caliber and Patriot used to be on the previous top 10 lists. The GM factory shut downs might have hurt the Cobalt since its still a popular fleet car and they still haven't gotten around to filling out all the orders. As for the Caliber and Patriot...I wouldn't want them...even if they were free.

Good news.... and to add to Jegan_V's point, I guess the only thing that's worse than those two vehicles is the Dodge Nitro.

I can one up even that monstrosity(and its Jeep clone the Liberty), the Sebring and Avenger. Its the rare sort of car that is good at absolutely nothing. Aside from the Ram, Viper and Challenger...the rest of the Chrysler products are flawed or very flawed.

I remember when the Cobalt came out back in 2005. It was the car that would send the Corolla to the junkyard according to the GM faithful.

Most likely because before the Cobalt, being a GM fan might have been pretty depressing aside from trucks. Doing significantly better than the Cavalier is what the Cobalt did do...its just the Cavalier set the bar really really low. I respect the Cobalt SS mostly because its the SS division working really hard to make your daily rental into something actually truly worth considering. The standard Cobalt/G5 however...its too generic to be perfectly honest. It just isn't the best at something, just average at...well everything. The only unique feature all Cobalt/G5 have over the competition...hood struts instead of a prop rod.

I guess being a GM car fan now is a bit mixed. While newer GM cars are clearly better than just the ones a few years ago, the loss of the excellent G8 and a significantly revitalized Ford make things much harder. Ford's product revamping is really aggressive that just about everything that has been updated, redesigned or brand new is really good now. Ford set the bar for how good domestics can be...can GM pass it because Chrysler clearly can't.
