With apologies to the Beatles, it was 20 years ago today Toyota taught the luxury auto establishment how to play. According to a message posted to Twitter from @Toyota, today is the day we all wish Lexus a Happy 20th Anniversary. Make a wish and blow out the candles – let's all party like its 1989!
It's hard to believe that 20 years have gone by since Toyota shocked the automotive world by unleashing the Lexus LS 400. That machine was born out of a project that began in 1983 to create a flagship automobile that could challenge the best the rest of the world had to offer. Needless to say, Toyota did just that when it launched the Lexus brand six years later, establishing itself as one of the "big three" luxury automakers in the U.S. Congrats Lexus! And here's to the next twenty.

totally agreed. perhaps they need to just make cars for the JDM market and slightly alter them for North America, instead of trying to make cars they think Americans want.
I think we have to wait till the next gen from my understanding.

They use to do that but now Lexus is becoming more separate which IMO I think is good. Lexus is now sold in Japan but obviously having a hard time cause the Japanese like the German makes. Also since Toyota used their name for high in cars and then switch to another name but still the high in cars doesn't do too well.

Even in Japan, Toyota=Lexus and BMW=BMW; Toyota still has to overcome that "perception" in their home market. It also doesn't help that the newer generation over there isn't interested in cars and driving as well.

If Volkwasgen buys BMW ... or Chrysler Buys Mercedes.. does that lower Mercedes and BMW?
Toyota makes Lexus.. and that is the end of the story.

Well, Japanese people have a different psyche when it comes to cars...to them, BMW and Mercedes and considered exotic since they're made in Germany and high status. When Lexus came out of the gate in 2006 in Japan, sales were below expectations. Right now, Lexus sales are starting to pick up in the home market thanks to the HS250h.
Lexus has evolved quite a bit over the last 20 years. It'll be an exciting 20 years ahead as we continue to follow the relentless pursuit of perfection.

Have you guys seen the new E Class Mercedes. See that and then the new Chrysler Sebring. Tell me that they don't reflect off of each other other than the Mercedes symbol on the hood.
I think the new 3 Series BMW is fugly... The IS is a very nicely designed vehicle.
Only problem I have is no manual transmissions in IS350 or the GS.
Well even Porsche is getting rid of manual trannys so not sure who to blame.
Part of the problem in Japan no doubt is that what were Lexus vehicles here in America were Toyotas in Japan until 2006. But Happy 20th, Lexus! I love the old LS commerical with the champagnec glasses on the engine.
