NEW YORK - Toyota Motor Corp. will pour $1 billion into a major U.S. marketing campaign in the fourth quarter, as the Japanese automaker bets on a recovery in the ailing auto market here.
The sum is "more than we've spent before" in the period, spokesman Irv Miller said. The fourth quarter is typically a strong sales season for automakers, who often launch big end-of-the-year promotions to drum up sales of new model-year vehicles. Toyota rolls out its "Toyotathon" marketing and sales blitz in November.
"We see the economy is starting to strengthen a bit," Miller said. "We've stopped playing defense. It's time to go on the offense."
Good for Toyota. Too bad they don't have exciting cars to promote. Hopefully they will include the new supposed Toyota sports car and LF-A. Maybe...I can dream.

I'm not entirely sure this is all that necessary. I mean Toyota's marketing is one of the few things they done well in the last few years the key car is really...the Prius. At first glance I'm sure some people were laughing at the idea of a "green" car selling and making a profit. If it weren't for Toyota's marketing and making the name extremely well known I doubt the Prius would be selling this well. I know a lot of auto enthusiast hate the Prius, but they respect how Toyota managed to actually sell it. Consider this, Honda's original Insight was a more fuel efficient vehicle and was released worldwide earlier...I don't recall seeing ads about it like I did with the Prius.
I rather see more money into development of exciting cars as ECHOKnight2000 suggested, or at least increase the quality in existing vehicles. You can always do better with more time and money.

If that LF-A comes.. would you have it in your garage?
Echo... what do you and everybody mean by an "exciting" car.. ??
Let's say Supra comes back.. is it going to be in every garage. Not in mine although I would almost die to have one.
It is a Manufacturer image thing in my opinion.
Where is Honda's PRELUDE?
Most manufacturers are canning sports cars IF that is what is called excitement by general public.. . Pontiac's Gs are history..
Even Hummer went to Chinese...
Toyota still making awesome off road vehicle.
The FJ Cruiser, the 4Runner, the Land Cruiser or anything that is not a "daily family hauler" are way nicer than any competitors in the market right now..
I mean drive the Pilot, drive the Envoys or Explorers.. and are you going to tell me that the 4Runner is not a better looking and sportier vehicle???
Look at the suspensions on the Toyota SUVs and compare with others and tell me those are boring..
I will tell you where Toyota is lacking excitement...
MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS
I have driven the Fusion/Taurus.. sorry ... enjoyed driving the Camry more.
..... and I think you guys would want the AVALON to have a STIFF suspension like the MAXIMA.. Right?
IMO, Toyota should host more hands-on test drive events to develop their public relations more.
Mini track-day type events like Mini have done in the past whereby a huge parking lot is closed off and pylons are set resembling a mini autocross course where consumers can get some seat time without the pressure of pushy salespeople on closing a deal. Pretty much what automotive journalists get paid to do.
Have a selection of the entire lineup for each day and give consumers a chance to sample all their products.

I agree 100% with these statements. Toyota does not build a sports car, but they do make more than capable off road vehicles.
I like Escalades and Yukon Denalis, but the Landcruiser and LX570 are just beautiful.
I'm hoping the new 4Runner will have a manual tranny with that 4 banger....... (front and rear locking diffs would be nice too)

They could start by building this: The new Tacoma is decent IMO, but throw back some nostalgia and I think you'll get back the ol' Toyota What a Feeling spirit back.

Love the FJ40 wheels on it.. All brand new.. If I had an FJ40.. I would put these wheels on it...

LOL! Of course I'll have it in my garage. A picture of it. Well I don't have my own garage. How about in my room??
I'm well aware (exception of maybe a few) sports cars are a niche' market. But its still important if they want to keep things fresh and attract younger buyers which Toyota needs badly.
I agree its all about image. Right now Toyota is staid and boring. Of course that depends on what you view as staid.
I'm not into SUVs and I wasn't referring to them, that's comparing apples to oranges. I'm talking about an outright sports car, not a sporty off road car. Something from the ground up. And I don't consider them a sports car. Yes there are "exciting" off road cars and I have no doubt about Toyota's, cause I know Toyota knows how to build an off road car.
I like the Tacoma, although I'm generally not a Truck guy. I do like the new Tundra, especially the TRD Supercharger. The old school pick up trucks are nice.

That is pretty cool looking, that concept is from SEMA in 2008. It had somthing Toyota hasn't put in a pickup truck in almost 25 years......a solid front axle!
IMO, Toyota has always had some of the funniest/catchiest ads in the industry. The PR department is top notch.

Also credit more so the ad agency they use. I agree they've had some cleaver ads.
