Toyota to shoulder Nummi plant closing costs ALONE
Bankruptcy, its a wonderful thing:
The New United Motor Manufacturing Incorporated assembly plantin Fremont, California, might have begun life as a joint-venture between General Motors and Toyota , but reports out of California indicate that only the Japanese automaker will be covering the cost of closing the plant , including worker severance pay and environmental concerns.
The portion of the former General Motors that is still languishing in bankruptcy, Motors Liquidation Corporation, says it is not planning to help out at all with the costs involved in closing the plant. GM has officially stopped producing the Pontiac Vibe at the facility, leaving Toyota as its sole occupier until the automaker moves out by March of next year.
Tim Yost, a spokesman for Motors Liquidation, told the Detroit News, “We don’t believe there will be a requirement for us to do so.”
GM abandoned the plant in June, leaving Toyota hanging. The Japanese automaker decided about a month later that it would also stop using the facility. The plant employed about 4,700 workers, meaning severance costs will climb well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars according to analysts at Maryann Keller & Associates. In addition, the firm says that numerous environmental issues, required by both California and the federal government will need to be addressed before the plant can officially be shuttered.
“This is an old factory, built when rules were quite different,” Maryann Keller said. “Who knows what kind of environmental issues will have to be resolved?”
This is a disgrace.
The exact reason why GM is in the bottom. That was so classless of GM. I love their cars, but now this really pisses me off. There isn't anything that binds GM to this plant despite their bankruptcy?

WRONG WRONG WRONG! You guys are all wrong! GM is a good corporate citizen and loves America so much that they don't care about profits and will do anything to help you and I. It's evil Toyota that wants to take over the world. Didn't you get the memo?

This doesn't surprise me, GM is SH!T and so are their cars!! I think that if the US government had any balls, or had the brains equal to that of a Toyota ECM, they would just shut down GM and say "NO, you guys F*CKED UP! Clearly you shouldnt be allowed to make cars anymore! GM GAME OVER!!" and just shut them down!!
I sure as hell would love that!!

Well, even if GM was to aid in it's closing, at this point, it would really be the taxpayers.
This is just what California needs-another factory lost.
California needs to just start dealing Pot!
This is a disgrace.

Even if Toyota sued and won, the taxpayers would get stuck with the bill. It's a no win situation with the Government owning GM. The fricken Unions should be liable...
The unfortunate thing about this is because Motors Liquidations Corp is still in bankruptcy and the federal judge can cancel the NUMMI contract. Because of our bankruptcy laws, GM gets to walk away from this with no loss to them. It really is a shitty situation for Toyota.

I would say that for Chrysler. I know its out of bankruptcy, but it still owes money back to us. But I think it was more of a waste on Chrysler which more than half probably 3/4 of the cars there are POS, ugly, terrible FE for their perspective class etc. Its just horrendous. The only Chrysler products I like are the Challenger, and Viper.
Yes I don't want GM to have our money, but they have more potential. The product is getting better. We just have to change the management. So they should live. Plus they are much bigger than Chrysler therefor they employ directly and indirectly more people.
