I'm sorry but there is just no way I could drive a car with an ugly lower grill like that. That is horrible. I don't know what they were thinking or how it got to production.
The front lower grille adds 15hp. Jokes aside, if the top grille was all black instead of chrome, it would've looked better. Or put a chrome bar horizontally in the middle of the lower grille to complement the upper grille. I like Avalons, my dad has a '99 with over 414,000 miles on, I have an '01 with over 268,000 miles, this style isn't doing it for me. It's a luxury sedan not a sport sedan.
We'll see how well it does. The Avalon team knows this may be their final effort to finally get it right. I'm with most here thinking most of the car looks pretty good but the grille...the more understated that thing is the better. The only cars I haven't tried in this segment are the Hyundai Genesis and the Azera. The Taurus is a very competent car despite its mass bulk and weight, a very nice car to drive. The Maxima is easily the sportiest of the bunch with probably the best engine but lacks the interior room of the others. The Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger are very good despite their great weight the Pentastar seems to have fixed some of it, and unlike the previous gen they show why RWD is such a good thing. The only so-so car is the Buick LaCrosse, with its near Corolla level loose steering, a dimwitted transmission and lousy optioning(possibly a Canada thing), despite that its comfortable and has probably the best interior volume for the passenger.
The Maxi has potential but its still FWD with a CVT
What about the newer Azera? That looks like a good buy.

I love the new Avalon! It is a huge step up from the previous generation!I actually saw one on the road.It was a Avalon limited in black and it was SEXY!I actually use to hate the front lower grill of it when I first saw it but then I started to like it as it fits in with the body of the car. Also, who really cares if there's no reclining rear seats anymore. At least the rear seats are really comfortable!(I got to sit in one at my Toyota dealership!)
Moral of the Story:Don't hate on the new Avalon!!!!
It's gigantic compared to the first generation Avalon in the background.
I liked the 98 and 99 styling the best tho it's front end and rear end was changed the styling looked pretty dam good esp in diamond white my parents had one they purchased new in 99. Honestly speaking been looking @ trying to drive a new 2013 Avalon but nothing here yet. I might give the New Lexus Es a look as well same price range and better customer service on the Lexus side. My mom's lexus I enjoyed driving the other day and the 3.5 v6 in rear drive has some fun factor involved
95 Avalon
98 reworke first gen Avalon
2000- 04 Boring boxy designed i hated that styling worst one on record.
2005 -2012 much better avalon best one to date.
2013 all new...

I don't understand why they changed the trim names from XL, XLS, Limited, to XLE, XLE Limited, etc. The XLE prefixes are used for Camrys. What's wrong with the old trim levels? Just one of those little things that bothers me I guess

It looks like it was designed to vacuum the streets vs a street sweeper ....fugly. the early avalons were nondescript...the 06 was ok...but this grill hits it outa the park,.......as a foul...!!!

It bugs me as well, though I guess they wanted to have consistent trim level names through out the brand.
I also agree that the Gen 1.5 Avalon was much better than the Gen 1, especially the rear.

the 2000-2012 Avalons failed to even gain my interest... so damn boring!! and the older models were mildly OK, I thought if I needed a beater I just might consider them.
I saw the commercials on TV for the 2013 Avalon and I thought... holyfuk, Toyota is finally going in the right direction with their cars, their new style has finally managed to make my head turn and say "that's a Toyota???"
Hopefully the next Corolla keeps some of these queues and looks as good.

Toyota is going to have to change the overall direction on where it's going. Frankly i'm going to say a few products like the Corolla are flat out boring dated by brothers wife owns one.Toyota need's to execute a new design that isn't dated same with the power train on the Corolla which is not fun at all. I agree with this review on the Corolla.
About the New 2013 Avalon Back to topic My mom's reviewed the new design online but mentioned the Current Avalon to the new one's look's like an old lady's car . I wanted to laugh being she is my mom but hell go for the Lexus and gain your young back which she did . Seriously speaking her sister has an 09 Avalon Limited so that maybe explains her direction this time around plus the Lexus has some cooler features and better attention to detail on service vs Toyota.
