i really dislike this feature.....especially for those that surf at work...if the boss ever happened to log on my comp by accident and see "last time you visited"..i'd be in shit....
how is that gonna help? If your employer wanted to can you for surfing while at work, there are tons of other ways they can track you. *looks over shoulder*
And if they are omnipotent...they can technically destroy themselves. If they can destroy themselves, but don't, then their existence is contigent. If their existance is contigent then they are not necessary for TN. But without the gods there would be no TN.
I love logic.
P.S.--MRQ...my guess is that the TN gods use this information to help their marketers. By tracking all of us they can tell when the most users are online and adjust ad spot rates accordingly--more exposure=more money. I bet it is for research/data collection.

It's not used for any sort of statistics. It's simply a timestamp value that is stored in your username's database entry. It's a feature that is part of the software we use. We didn't deliberately add the feature. Regardless, my guess as to why the programmers added it most likely stems to the BBS/unix shell days when that value was (and still is) important to know when the last time you logged in just in case someone else had logged in with your account in an unauthorized manner since your last [legit] login.
And yes, they can check that. I remember Will pointing out that I had been on his site for 12 hours one day (when I left my comp on overnight). Think we could set up a page with "time spent" listings? Like total time, and average per/day? That would be really cool.
If not that, maybe just start a thread for the top 30 people who Live on TN?
