The EGR system only operates at idle and partial throttle. It's there to help cool down the cylinder chamber by releasing CO2. Your car will heat up and run lean without it.

Also, there are many other low cost catch cans. Right now I have a breather on the crankcase hose that I routed down near the tranny. When I start smelling the vapors, that's when I know it needs to be cleaned or replaced.
