I change mine every 6 months! But the cables should last a long time, another thing that alot of people look over is the rotor, this small piece that rotates inside the distributor, and it usually collect carbon and become a bad conductor, it's really cheap (About $4-$8 average)..
The cables make a big difference, you'll feel a difference with the spark plugs too but then it kind of goes away after a while...
