Thumbs down Shop Burnt Down, My Car There

We've been friends with my mechanic for about 10-15 years now. We met him through his son, who went to school with my sister. He always gives us amazing deals, and sometimes doesn't charge for small work. My car was up there and I was going to pick it up on the 14th, but it was locked inside the fence and I couldn't get it because he had left for the day. The next morning, I call my mom to take her to lunch and ask about plans for lunch and when we are getting my car. She goes "Uh... plans have changed, there was a fire at the shop." I about fell over right there. Then she said my car was fine, as it was left outside (for once, due to no rain). Whew!!!! My sister grabbed my spare and a friend and retrieved the car for me to pick up later. She's untouched by fire, smoke, soot, water, anything. My original key is toast though. Here's some pics of the damage.

My car is in lower corner, was right beside the building inside the fence.

3 cars inside are a complete loss. From what my mom and sister have told me, the hoods of all the cars were blown off the cars because of the fire. You can kinda see it in the photos.

This really sucks. Our mechanic dropped insurance a few months ago, so he won't be getting anything from it. The vet/boarder across the way facing his building said it caught fire at about 4 AM. There was a camera outside the shop, but... if it was recording, that video is long gone too. My sister told me this is the 4th shop in 4 weeks to burn.

Damn, that sucks big time. Very fortunate that your car was left outside! I feel sorry for the other peoples cars inside the shop though. If it turns out it was caused by arson, then I sure hope they catch the bastards who did it

He gives everyone amazing deals. When I told some friends what work he's done and what he charges me, they simply dropped their jaw. He has no overhead he has to give money to, so the work he does is cash in his pocket.

I am completely thinking vandals seeing as how it wasn't the first or last one to burn within probably 20 miles. It really sucks though.

I am glad that your car made it out ok. I am wondering why any business owner would drop insurance on their building. I mean if he is parking and leaving cars in his shop (not to mention protection against theft) it seems a tad irresponsible.

Yeah that's definitely a bad business practice...

I thought your car is done, it's a misleading post subject!!!

He dropped it about two months ago due to "rough times". Sucks. My car might have some slight discoloration on the top now that I look at it again, or it could just be dirty.

Nonetheless, new car search has began for other reasons.

Whew! I thought your Miata was toast too. Don't do that!
Glad she was unscathed. I know you are!
And Why on earth would he drop his insurance?

I dunno why from what I've seen something bad always happens when one gets rid of their insurance!
