it is a legit question. large, cast wheels are typically heavier than the stock steel wheels. they have more rotating mass, and therfore affect (degrade) accleration, gas mileage, etc.
a recent issue of car & driver had a good article in which they compared several sizes (15", 16", 17", 18") cast wheels of the same brand / type against each other on a single car and measured the performance with each wheel. acceleration times and fuel mileage dropped off with the larger wheels.
we recently installed aftermarket wheels on our '05 and i do admit to going plus one (16"), but, i didn't want to go any larger because of this very issue.
I dig it!!! Would I do it myself no but I still love the way it looks. I just wouldn't want to deal with recalibrating the speedo and have an increased wear on suspension parts. I'm probably gonna try and score a set of 17" scion tc wheels for cheap I like it though!
