How to draw a car (Solara). 25 Step Tutorial *56K May take a while*
Okay guys! Here it finally. The 25-step tutorial I promised on how to draw a car. The three step from before is kind of fast paced. Doesn't show you much what to do. I made this one with more details and yes, words. You have to read it otherwise, it ain't a tutorial. Enjoy! Tell me what you guys think!
sweet job man, thats really helpful- ill have to post up some of the gen 3 camrys ive done while being bored in math class... theyre not as detailed as yours, but its fun to kill time.
Heres my crappy first attempt... took about 10 minutes. I can definately see how much this helps though, I think if I tried it a few more times for longer I could get the hang of it. The front right is obviously smooshed... I almost always have trouble with the c pillar when I draw cars, it just never looks right... but hey, whats practice for? the first one is supposed to suck right guys?? I got lazy on the rims.... and I decided not measuring the proportion was a bad idea on the headlights... theyre too small. Do you use a sighting stick when you draw xpeed?
No, I don't use anything. You can say it's more of a feeling on how the proportion looks like when I draw it. I never did well using those stuff like sight sticks and measurements of the pencil tip, blah blah. All mush. I just use my eyes and guessing.
BTW, nice first try. At least someone is using the tutorial I made and it actually came out quite nice. Not bad. Keep it up.
yeah man, its a great tutorial. I was never much for using measuring devices until my first year of college... they drill the sighting stick into your brain week after week- proportions, proportions, proportions! they really beat it into me and now I cant draw from observation without one. Ill post up some of my still life drawings sometime...
You forgot to mention the most crucial part: you have to know how the Solara looks like without looking at pics. I guess this might be personal opinion, you can always have a pic beside you while you draw it out. But with this in mind, it's also good to have a 3D view of the car. That way you can rotate it around in your mind any way you like and still can draw the car out.
That also forces me to draw using a pen, so I can draw a clean sketch and not have to worry about erasing, redoing a line, etc. Final drawing, paper is clean, no erasures, and it looks industrial too. If I make a mistake on one line, I start over unless I can "fix" it...
I guess I'm too OC
Good job! That's alot of effort. May I ask how long it took you to make these 25 steps, scan them and post them?
Also, yeah I have a hard time with wheels too. And I like to draw really small...with lots of detail...
Thanks for sharing!
Edit: A shadow would also look sharp, now that the 25th image just uploaded (56k)
LoL thanks, but this wasn't a tutorial on how to draw a Solara so I didn't bother to compare it with a picture. I wasn't using a picture at the time, but I did use the angle that's probably similar to this. All of my steps are the basic lines in drawing a car from steps 1-7, steps 8-25 is the next time in drawing the car you want to or design. And yes, I learned this from a car design school, until I dropped it because I couldn't afford it any more. Also, most of my step s are self taught. As for the pen, I can also do it with a pen without having the though of making a mistake, but that's only in school. I only use a pen when I'm designing a car myself. But when I'm drawing a existing car, i usually use pencil because I end up shading it.
See the resemblance?
Anyways, the shading is hard for me to teach because it's my own personal style. Everyone has their style, so I didn't bother. If you'd like to see some of my shaded work, they're probably around here in the forum somewhere. But I'll spare you the hassle and post this. Well, thanks for the comments!
Pencil/Graphite:
Color
You got great hands! Even the color renderings are great, I remember that Tiburon advertisement on a magazine lol
It seems you mix cross hatching with your own style, as I don't do colors yet, I can't comment else more on your Tiburon, but it's damn sweet!
I myself also shade my cars but I still use a ballpoint pen. No gel-pens or signpens for me. I found out the best but cheapest ballpoint pens are the Pilot ones
Do you use an eraser to draw as well? Kneaded rubber is great for putting accents/shine. I have yet to try drawing on a black piece of paper!
Best tool I use is when I smudge my pencil sketches to blur some parts and give it a fade effect, especially when the sides reflect a horizon not too far away...
May I ask, since you draw alot of cars, which one is your favorite to draw?
