2000 Solara check engine light

Hello Folks!
I am new here and I would greatly appreciate your help. I have a question about my Solara. I recently had to change the battery and after I did the check engine light came on. The car runs fine but can you please tell me if this is normal? Will the light turn off by its self? I bought the car about 4 years ago with 26000 on it now it has 57000 so I dont think its anything major. I appreciate the help.

Thank you,
Mike

The absolute best thing you can do is get it scanned to see what the problem code is. You can dissconnect the negative battery terminal for 15 minutes to reset the codes. There are numerous parts stores that will scan it for free and explain the problem code for you. Autozone is the largest that i can think of that will do this service free of charge. Find out the code and let us know. We are here to help.

I agree just reset it first. The light should go away if there are no problems. But if it comes back on you should get it scanned.

scan it regardless. If its free it only costs time. This may give you some insight to possible work that would need to be done down the road. Just my .02

Hey Thanks 1 Gen Sol for that info.

The light went away. According to a mechanic I know, this is normal on all new cars. The car's computer is doing what it should have done, (a little late ) but its letting me know there was a problem with the battery. He says that if all is well the light will go away on its own.

thanks fellas!

Hey everyone. I also have a 2000 Solara.

My check engine light has been on for years. I had it checked a couple of years ago, and they said the problem was with the catalytic converter. It wouldn't really hurt the car, I guess my emissions would just be, well, not so good. They wanted about $300 to fix it.

I'm thinking maybe I should go to Autozone again to see what's up with it. What do you guys think?

The local Toyota dealership wanted $90 just to hook the car up and tell me why the check engine light was on.

I've had the same problem for my 95 Avalon and my mech. (at a Toyota Dealership) scanned it with a OBD II scanner and also said it was the catalytic converter. He told me the case was most likely the oxygen sensor. Nothing to worry about just needs a new sensor. I just never got a replacement and dealt with the check engine light on.

I realize it's a long time between posts, but I'm wondering -
Is it possible that my check engine light problem could be affecting gas mileage? Could it affect MPG if it is either the oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter?

Your mech buddy doesn't know much about new cars then....
If the ALT stops charging, the BATTERY light will come on, not the CEL.
If you remove your bat and replace with a new one, NO light should come on.
The CEL shouldn't go off without being reset.
Does it come on when you turn the key to on?

A bad O2 sensor WILL cause your gas milage to go down.
It can also cause the engine to run rough.
There IS a reason [besides them wanting your $$] that they tell you to replace it..............................
Also, even if it is just the O2 sensor, which won't cause that much damage [it can cause the engine to carbon up more if it makes it run rich, and the cat also], you can't tell if a more important code comes up, as the light is already on.

Bottom line, if you have a CEL, you need to get it fixed. It's called a warning light for a reason.

I have a 2002 solara that after 3 trips to the shop with the CEL on, the o2 unit was replaced. Everything was fine for about a month and now the light came back on and started flashing. When autozone read it they said misfire on #2 cyl. Any help?

Unhappy

If your MIL (malfunction indicator light) is flashing, then it indicates a severe misfire and you should look into it right away. Severe misfires will dump excess fuel into your exhaust and destroy your cat, if its a spark failure. If it is a fuel failure then you most likely have a clogged injector. Either way its a problem, have it checked out. Good luck
