Gen1 99 Solara SLE

Hello everyone. This is my first real post here. I just bought a 99 Solara SLE with 112,xxx miles about 2 weeks ago. I also got a 5yr/100,000 mile warranty so I didn't care much about the miles. But I was wondering what grade of gas you guys use. I have read online that I need 91 but also read to use 87 so I'm not sure if 91 is needed. I am a previous Jeep owner so I don't know anything about Toyotas. Thanks in advance.

P.S. I love my car!

Your solara does not "need" 91.
87 will do just fine.

I was running 89 for a long time in my solara and only getting 24 mpg highway, now that i've switched to 87 I'm getting 28 mpg highway, so it helped alot on my car. I would just run 87 if I was you

The only time you need higher than 87 is if you are boosted...

Sounds good. Thanks. I have been using 87 with no problems as of yet, so I just wanted to make sure.

I would use higher octane because knock sensors are expensive to replace. if you use lower octane, you will have higher chance have detonation. but i do not know what is the compression ratio for 1mzfe.

Read your owner manual. 1MZFE requires 87 or higher (or 91 RON).
We are living in the US, we use (RON+MON)/2

Actually water has higher octane than race gas.

I was instructed to use 87 regularly and every 6 fill-up go 89/91, but since we're lucky enough that gas is not yet as expensive as it is in the US, I use 89 and switch it up to 91 every third fill. 87 should be fine.

I have a "99 Soalra SLE as well. I've used 91 octane for a long time now. I just feel bad using 87. I feel guilty since I've been told that I should use 91. Anyway, did you experience better fuel economy with a lower octane? I'm avg about 22 or 23 mpg.

I've had my '99 V6 since new. (This is a California car, which may make a difference.)
The manual says 87 is not good. 89 is minimum, but the computer does read the knock sensor and will give it more advance (more power) with higher grades. I've achieved best performance running 91 and a bottle of cheap fuel injector cleaner (Gumout, STP, or whatever) per tankful. I've never bothered to compare rmileage, but it stands to reason that more power = more gas = worse mpg.

I average 22-23. I use 87 or 91 depending on how much money I have for gas.
