Paint Chip Problems

I have a 2006 Solara with the Silver Myst paint. It seems to chip pretty easily and it also happens to be black underneath so you see the chips pretty good when you get up close. Is this a normal problem?

I found out there is a "Paint Protective Film" that the dealer can install for you. It's a pricey package, but it is supposed to eliminate rock chips and so on. Does anyone have this on their car? Is it truly invisible?

It seems my car is a rock magnet.

The black underneath is consistant with other Gen2 owners with Luner Mist. Not sure if it's some type of primer or the base coat. My Absoultely Red Gen2 has white underneath my paint.

I hear the clear bra is the way to go. (Of course you want to fix the chips first.) For me, I'm just waiting to respray some day soon.

Good Luck. Post up pics if you get the clear bra.

Truly invisable? Well no, not invisable. It is hard to detect but imagine applying a clear film about the thickness of a piece of paper. Depending upon the angle it does slightly change the light reflection of the finish. If you look closely you can see the edge. How it will affect color fade over time is another question. But it probably is the best choice. Far less noticable and less problematic than a regular bra and more chip resistant than unprotected paint. You didn't ask but - worth the money? Personal choice on that one.

Toyota uses a water based paint for enviromental reasons. It does chip a little worse than other paints. Our Solara is red and has a few little chips in the front of it, but nothing major.

Smile Paint and Body Maintenance and Repair

I couldn't find anyone to fix my the dents on my car. Everyone said it was not worth it or it was too expensive. If found http://mastermatchauto.com in long beach,ca 90815 and they came to me! They are working on my car right now doing the body work, primer, dent removal, primer, sanding, base coat, and clear coat paint job. I saw their site and the quality auto refinishing and dent repair and I felt confident and safe with them. They have some nice classic cars, porsches, and even have done work on expensive ferarris... So finally I will have a nice paint job and all the chips and cracks in my paint will be repaired!

Consider of buying a magnetic clip on bra. It ties down as well somewhere

Put it on when doing highway driving. Take it off when your at your destination. Helps out HUGE on long trips with bug splatter and of course rock chips, wind damage (driving from one stat to another and doing 60-70mph the whole time, its wearing down that front end over time).

Second tip, on the highway stay 5-7 car lengths away from the car infront of you... You'd be suprised how far those rocks kick out and how high...
