Cold Air Intake

Hey I'm new here and I recently bought a 2002 Solara V6 SLE , Its a gorgeous car and I love it. Its already fast stock. I bought it with 96k for 11k total. I am really interested in a cold air intake system to put on my solara. I have read these forums and I have made up my mind that I would prefer a CAI over a RAM. Now I have an Auto-zone near me and I would like to go there and purchase one for my car. I just don't know what fits though, I know there are CAI specifically for my car but they are waay to expensive. The cheapest one I found was 124$ and thats a great price IMO.

So is there a way that I can know if a CAI system would fit in my car? Like is there some sort of measurement I should know so I can buy one that would fit. Also I am installing it alone, not because I don't have the money but I really want to get into modding cars. I know this car would look gorgeous with more mods on it but I am starting slow. Thanks in advance for the help guys!

The only solara specific CAI they make for the V6 is to run the injen short ram intake with a custom extension. Someone over on solara guy had them made a few years back, so the odds of finding one may be a little slim... you could always buy a short ram and have pipe added, it shouldnt be too hard or costly... I dont thinm the power differences will be anything substantial though, but the sound will be nicer.

the company that used to make the cold air extensions (UPFD), Under Pressure Fabrication and Design, no longer does so or either they went out of business. If that's what you want to do, best bet is to try to do it yourself or take it to a custom shop.

This is what I did on my 1994 1MZFE. I bought a AEM SRI and had some extra piping and created a CAI with it. I could definitely *feel* a little bit more after the conversion in terms of power.

intake is a pipe with a cone filter slapped on. Honestly for little things such as an intake... a cheap ebay one would do fine as long as you got a k&N filter or something instead of the cheap filters.

theres a lot of people that fabricate their own parts and it's honestly not that hard to make. just simple things of course.

oh and just another note.... with a CAI, beware of large puddles of water. If you live in places like Texas or other places with huge rain fall you might want to get a Short Ram. Theres a reason AEM made a thing called the bypass valve.

imo the easiest way to do things is to do what I did in my accord.

Get a 3" diameter pvc piping or a metal piping. Cut a section off so it's about 5 inches.

Take the filter box off.

Shove the 3" piping in the existing tube.

Stick a cone filter on it.

And you're done. Heres the best part.... it turned out just as much Hp as a short ram intake.

4th Generation

What does adding one of these filters do for the car? I heard that it increases performance....hp...but does it increase gas mileage also? I'm wondering if by just adding the 3" PVC tube with a K&N filter would be a cheap test to see what does happen. Are there any other engine mods that have to be made to do this?
