shifter control backlighting

Hello again!
I own a 2001 solara. I had noticed that when driving at night, the letters on the gear shifter (its a automatic) dont light up when i turn my lights on. Is that supposed to be like that? I thought they were suppose to light up. Also i noticed that the ac/heat dials dont light up also, but everything else does. Is this they way its supposed to be or is there a fuse or bulb i have to change.
Any help?

Thanks a million

Sounds like both of you have bulbs that are out.
