Angry 01 Solara P0340 Trouble code

My car failed TN emissions yesterday (second year in a row). The trouble code this year was P0340. Is anyone familiar with this code?

I maintain my car well, regular oil changes, check-ups. It is 121K miles on it. At 90K miles, I took it to the Toyota dealer for it's 90K check-up, timing belt was replaced and whatever else they recommend for 90K miles.

I would be really excited if this is a cheap fix. Is there a way to clear the code so I can go get tested again?

Also, I know I am supposed to drive through my car drive cycle before I get retested. What is the drive cycle for an '01 Solara?

Thanks much!
Kristal

Kristal,

The book says that code is: P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

While I've no idea where the camshaft position sensor is located I'm wondering if it might have something to do with your timing belt change. Did you have the belt replaced two years ago and was it the same code last year?

You 'can' clear the code simply by stopping by an auto supply store like Autozone, Kragen etc where they'll let you borrow a code reader. Plug it in under the dash, push the 'clear codes' button and your warning light will go off.

The "drive cycle" creates a little hitch. That's the 100 miles or so it takes for the computer to totally clear any sign of the code. Try to be re-tested before that cycle is complete and the tester will know you've cleared a trouble code just before stopping by for inspection so you'll flunk again. If your warning light comes on again within that 100 miles (or during the test) you're going to fail again sooooo, it'd (obviously) be best if you had the problem repaired.

Cheers
