2 rpm issues

Any thoughts or suggestions of what may need to be done before I head to the mechanic on my 2002 SE v6 manual. I'm running a k&n air filter have had an injector cleaning and engine flush about 3,500 miles ago.

1. When the engine is cold regardless of air temp the rpms/idle is steady at about 2000 then slowly drops to the normal range as the engine warms. I've tried resetting the ecu but there was no change.

2. In 5th my rpms seem unusually high, 3000 at about 75 mph.

Other than these 2 issues the engine runs fine but my mpgs have steadily droped.

Thanks for any advice or thoughts,
Ethan

there are no issues....

1. every car will idle high on a "cold" startup.

2. 3k RPMs is normal for 70-75mph

clarification

Yes I understand all cars idle higher when cold this particular situation was something that has just sort of happened one day and is out of the norm for my vechicle I missed typed the last message idle usually holds steady around 2,800 rmps. The rpms at freeway speed are also something that have risen and my original thought was engine sludge so I had a flush done.

Has the high cold start idle always been there or just started?

If the engine has a MAF sensor try cleaning it (read up on this process first by doing a TN search). Then switch back to the original paper filter setup and determine if MPG and RPM come back to normal.

Mmmm, thoughts.

What you're describing for cold engine idle speed sounds perfectly normal. Maybe there was a problem before that's cleared itself up.

Sludge has nothing to do with engine speed in any gear. Sludge 'will' clog oil passages but there's no connection with the transmission. Engine flushes can be useful for high mileage cars or those that are only used for short trips where the oil never really gets warmed to operating temperature.

About the higher than normal (at least perceived) rpm. Since you have a manual transmission is your clutch slipping? It's easy to tell. With the transmission one gear higher than it should be for whatever speed you're going stomp on the gas while watching the tach (and the road). If the rpm's rise quickly but speed doesn't you have a clutch issue which could easily cause highway rpm to be higher than it once was along with a drop in fuel mileage. That wouldn't continue for long before the clutch is completely fried.

I suspect mileage is falling for many of us. Refineries in many parts of the U.S. are producing their 'summer blend' which, in some cases, uses more Ethanol or other oxygenates than winter blends. Ethanol has lower heat value than gasoline so with the gas essentially watered down mileage drops (while prices go up).

Cheers

It is normal to have a high idle as it warms up and then steps down to idle.

You could try cleaning the MAF and or putting a can of seafoam through the system.

The values given are within acceptable limits.
