Volume Problems with JVC am/fm/cd

Hello Solara Nation,

I have a 2005 Solara convertible. For the last few weeks I have been experiencing an annoying problem with the JVC am/fm/cd unit.

At first I thought it was with the JVC unit itself. The volume blanks out for about a second then comes back. It does it on am/fm/cd.

Over the weekend I traveled most of the day with the top down and noticed the problem vanished. Later that day sitting in the hot sun I put the top up and immediately the problem returned. Then put the top down again as a test and it vanished again. I did it 2 days straight with the same results.

When the top is retracted there is a circuit that adjusts the volume up to compensate for outside noise. It is now obvious that there is a problem with the adjustment circuit that keeps trying to adjust the volume.

Does anyone know if there is a contact/sensor in the top mechanism and where is it located. I have no problem changing it myself or even bypassing it to eliminate this annoying problem.

Your comments are most welcome!

Thanks,

Randy

Hey Randy,

I've seen this one before in a post from another Solara convertible owner. There is a switch in the trunk that's toggled when the top is up or down to change the EQ of the sound system. If you open the trunk and remove the gray panel on the top of the trunk (between the trunk and rear panel where the trunk light is) the switch should be somewhere on the right (sorry I can't be more specific). Since the switch is activated by the top it shouldn't be too hard to find.

The other owner replaced the switch rather than try to repair it.

Cheers

Cheers

this switch is actually located in the pass rear panel (where an occupant would be sitting) if you pull the panel off you will see a switch that almost looks like a courtesy switch for a door. i have seen most people just disconnect it due to the only purpose it serves is when speeds increase with the top down the radio will increase or decrease pending on driving condtions

Thanks for the 2 replies on this problem.

Ordered this switch online. It's called a courtesy switch but in this particular application it's activated when the top is down to activate the amplifier to increase the volume. Seems with the top up this switch was faulty.

Took the panel off and found the switch just about where the passenger's elbow would be. Removed 2 screws replaced switch and problem is now gone.

Thanks again

Randy
