Question Help with programming 2001 Solara Convert. garage door opener

I just bought a 2001 Solara convertible in excellent condition, but the owner couldn't locate the owner's manual.
I have been unsucessful thus far trying to program the visor mounted garage door opener to operate my Craftsman door opener.
Previous owner gave me verbal instructions to re-program the opener ( hold two outside buttons till red light flashes rapidly then simultaneously press buttons on craftsman transmitter and selected visor button ) but have not been successful. I even tried to do it by pressing the "learn" button on the opener and then the visor button.
I went to the Homelink web site and pulled up the instructions for this vehicle and still have not benn able to activate it.
First... Is this visor mounted transmitter a Homelink unit?
Second.. Since I do not have the owners manual can someone who knows the proper procedure please walk me thru it?
Last Question...What is the switch ( marked "DOOR " ) located between the map lights in the area of the rear view mirror for?

Thanks!
P.S. What octane fuel is recommended for this car?
It's a V6 I believe it is a 3.0L

I tried

My wife's 06 Impala has a homelink button and try as I might finally gave up trying to program it to my garage opener.
Now when I got the 08 convertible Solara I didn't want to keep the garage door opener on the visor an open target for someone if I left the top down away from the house.
I subsequently tried to program the homelink in the Solara and ran into the same trouble. After reading my garage door opener directions and realizing that it must be a rolling code opener I had my oldest grandson hold the buttons down in the car while I stood on the stepladder and pressed the learn button. I almost gave up again and all of a sudden it worked and the garage door went up! I would like to tell you how to do it but only luck could have made it work. Keep trying and maybe you will get lucky too.

i just reprogramed my homelink
recommend to erase all setting first by holding the outter two buttons until it start flashing rapidly.

then push and hold the button you want to program, and at the same time press and hold your remote transmitter for 2 to 5 seconds interval, you might have to place the remote transmitter 2 to 4 inch close to home link light. and the homelink light will be flash slow, once it learns the code, light will be flashing very rapidly, let go of all button, and you are done
