Canada Supercharging a gen1 automatic

So I hear that supercharging is rough on an automatic tranny... anyone here done it and have some words of wisdom to pass on? I work mostly on planes... just learning as I go with cars, but unfortunately this isn't something that is very transferable from my trade! I'd imagine the amount of boost you're running would make a difference, but does anyone have an concrete evidence that this is rougher on an automatic tranny than a standard? I'd hate to hurt my baby and just cause myself more work for the sake of a few more HP!

JX,

I can't speak to whether the Solara transmission would need beefing up if you supercharged but maybe this owner can: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/537503/3 Check out his mods, supercharger, nitrous and more. Just Google "solara supercharge transmission", you'll find other examples.

Of course it makes sense that if a transmission is designed to handle 220 horsepower and suddenly it has to deal with 50% more than that you'll at the very least have a lot more heat, clutches will probably be more prone to slippage etc.

Cheers

if you stay on stock boost (4psi), your tranny will hold up just fine. At stock boost and a couple of bolt-ons, most ppl are running about 190-200whp (federal spec, not cali spec), which is about 40-50whp over stock.

With a tranny cooler, the tranny will hold up just fine. At about 220whp, a daily beating on the tranny will start to take its toll.

As for reliability, as long as there is oil in the blower, it will run for 30K without maintenance. Long story short, chances are you'll wreck your motor/transmission before the supercharger goes bad.
