99 solara transmission problem

I have a 99 solara with an automatic trans. the problem started a week ago. the car does not shift from 1st to 2nd gear, (more when cold), until about 5000 rpm. The shift is smooth and not harsh and all other shifts are fine. Checked fluid, ok, took it to dealer and they said needed rebuild or they could flush and fill with detergent scrubber for $300.00 or $2600 to rebuild. Any thoughts? I am going to change fluid and filter and see if that helps.

I don't have an automatic, but the flush is worth a try. I wouldn't take it to a dealer for a flush, $300 sounds way too much. If it doesn't work, just give it ample time to warm up before you go anywhere.

A flush should cost around $150 at aftermarket shops.

My armchair analysis says you don't have a transmission problem at all. You have a temperature sensing/control issue. Now, it may be that the temperature sensing and/or control is located in the transmission, but it is probably sensing engine coolant temperature and the shifting is probably controlled by the ECU.

The statement that it shifts fine when warm says the transmission is probably just fine. Your transmission is being "told" to hold it in a low gear by some other controlling agency. My 2004 Tundra did something similar -by design, it just wasn't that extreme.

You need someone that can perform proper diagnostics - your dealer did not do that!

it got worse

sorry the problem has gotten worse 2nd gear is slipping horribly to almost gone. I turn off OD and while in 3rd gear try mashing the gas and the engine just revs....if I rev the car high in 1st gear it will shift to 3rd so i found a used trans locally for $300 with 120k on it. so looks like I'll be doing a trans swap. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Planning on pulling motor and trans then switching the trans.

Thank you for the help
