White Smoke from AC Vents(AC is now dead)

I Thank anyone for any help ahead of time.

I have a 00' Toyota Solora 4cyl, 150k miles.

One day we were driving and a bunch of white smoke with a strange smell came out of the vents. Then the AC took a dump and when the AC is now turned on it smells like burning rubber. I have done some research and it looks that either the heater core or evaporator core has taken a dump on me.

Questions am I on the right track? I want to further isolate the issue to make sure that I purchase the correct part.

Any help would be great. Thank You.

If your heater core was leaking, your engine would quickly overheat as you would lose all the antifreeze. Evaporator cores rarely go. Before you start throwing parts and money into a repair, I suggest you bring the car into a qualified AC repair facility and have the system tested and diagnosed. It will be money well-spent. Hy

My guess also would be the compressor; that's the most likely cause of smoke and failure on an AC system. The problem is that the system has now been contaminated with smoke, etc. from the compressor burn-up. The system needs to be checked out, repaired, flushed, and recharged. The diagnosis should be made by someone who knows and is qualified to diagnose, AC problems. The repair can be made by the owner if he/she has mechanical abilities and tools. Replacing a compressor is not a complicated job in itself. The flush, vacuum, and fill must be made by a qualified AC technician. Hy

Now that the system is void of gas is not very difficult to to vacuum the system. I am not familiar with flushing the system as a good vacuum should purge the system. Any good quality vacuum pump will draw the system down. Any leaks in the system will show up when the pump cannot place a high vacuum on the system. The fill again is not too difficult as you need the gas and an accurate scale to measure the change in weight.

Replacing the compressor is very straight forward but a real knuckle basher. Cheapest place for a new compressor is Amazon.
