Smile Should I change timing belt?

Hello, I drive a 2001 Solara SLE V6 with 110k miles on it. I haven't changed the timing belt, but I'm definitely considering it now that I drive 40 miles a day in it. The car drives fine, is this something I need to replace now, or can I wait until it gives me problems?

Thanks!

Mileage? 1MZs are non-interference engines, so it won't damage anything when it goes....but when it does go...it'll be at the most inconvenient time.

It won't "give you problems"; it will simply die. It you drive 40 miles per day, you obviously need your car. Get it changed now before you're sitting in rush-hour traffic, late for work. Hy

Change it and the tensioners. At the same time, check your other belts, water pump and thermostat -- all easy preventive maintenance while you're in there. Good Lock !!!

Timing belt

Thank you for the advice. I have a 2004 Solara convertible. Just took it to the dealership for 60,000 mile service. They told me I had to replace both the front brake pads and rear brake pads because they were both worn. (I found that a little suspicious, that both would have problems at the same time). Had a bill in excess of $1100. They also told me I needed to change the timing belt. It is squealing and it is recommended at 60,000 miles or 6 years. I have never heard it squeal at all. Of course, they said that it might break and I'd be stranded. I decided to take the chance, because I have AAA. They quoted me $880 to do that, because the water pump has to be changed at the same time. After reading the above comments, and finding out that someone has 100,000+ miles without changing the timing belt, I think I was robbed with their suggestion (the dealer). I now also wonder if the brake pads really needed to be changed, too. I certainly don't trust the dealer now. And of course, I think those repairs were pushed on me, because I'm female, and don't know any better. So, happy to get the good advice. I'll change where I get it serviced.

I've traded in my Solara since my posting, but I'm still glad to help. (It's the teacher in me.) I assume you have the 6 cylinder engine. If you check your owner's manual, I think you'll find it recommends the belt be changed at 90-100k miles, so you've got a while to go. Changing the water pump when you change the belt is not necessary, but is advisable since the part is under $100 and the labor to change it later is about $1000 since they would be taking everything apart again as if they were changing the timing belt again. I'd suggest you get your brakes checked elsewhere. Front pads usually last about 15-20k miles; rear pads usually last about 30-35k miles. The front rotors do wear, but you can have them resurfaced rather than replaced if they don't show signs of overheating. Find yourself a different mechanic. The dealer seems out to sell you a great deal of work. Hope this helps. Hy
