2000 Solara, V6, Rough Running

I currently have an intemittent problem with the car running rough. Follows no pattern, could happen a couple of days in a row or not show up for a couple of weeks. What happens when it does shows up is that the enigine will start running rough like it is going to cut off, but it doesn't. It cycles between 300 - 900 RPM at idle. Can accelerate at idle and when driving with no problem, though you can tell the car is running a little rough as you drive and is real noticable when you stop again. The car never cuts off though it acts like it will. Once you cut the engine off and come back in an hour or two the problem is initially gone but could come back again. The problem never clears up once it starts until the engine has rested for a while, 1- 2 hours. No engine light, no codes. Had all plugs changed and recently had an o2 sensor changed (I did have a code for that, code went away after replacement and I had the running rough problem before the O2 failure, I originally thougt that was the problem). Had dealer mechanic look at it, could not diag without code. His suggestion hit or miss part replacement $$$$. Car has around 75K miles. Any suggestions, need help. Thanks in advance.

Hey how does your air filter look? Get a new one if its dirty, i guess you can start from there to figure out your problem. Or it could be anything who knows lol.

Well before you get to the $$$$ parts to be changed, how is the fuel filter? that should set you back about $35 USDollars.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far. I am checking them all out now and will let you know my results as soon as I can. I bought a Haynes manual but really need a good factory manual multi volume. I searched for the factory manuals and found a couple of links, anyone bought the manuals? I want to make sure I get the right ones. Thanks again everyone. Let me know about the manuals.
