no, its bad to underfill as well, keep it between the marker lines.

I'm guessing your referring to 1mzfe, i assumed that always took 4.6 qtz! i always fill in 4 qtz on my 1mzfe and then add another l/4 qt next day to come as close to F marker.

i guess we all have our own takes on this...
my opinion: its bad to be low! Just as long as you are middle of the marker or higher then you should be good...at least attempt to bring up your oil levels to the upper side of the marker...anything above the F mark would be bad...(overfill)
if you overfill by a bit, it;s OK.
underfill, as in between the F and L on the dipstick is OK
if you really overfill, you car will choke and die on the road side. that's what happened to somebody I know in a mazda. I think it was overfill quite alot and it just died on the road side while driving.
It probably wouldn't do anything detrimental. The pan on the v6's probably hold 6 quarts if not more.
I'll let you know when I take it off and put an oil return line on mine. :P

Hey everyone I am new to this site and a new owner of a Solara, first let me say I really like the Solara and now my two cents on overfilling, I have heard that overfilling any car can cause the oil to get air bubbles in it wich is NOT GOOD at all so I would try to keep the level at where says it is full, I really dont think that a little bit over will cause much damage but if one keeps doing it over time it can cause problems. Just my two cents, hope I could help some.
A half quart probably won't hurt anything, but you really *should* do it right and fill to 4.5 quarts.
A seriously excessive amount of oil in the crankcase will probably cause leaks and/or oil use as crankcase pressure pushes oil past seals, gaskets, and rings. Additionally, as WhiteTrash2775 noted, can also cause aeration, which will prevent proper lubrication.
Regards,

For next change i would fill to full mark and not more than half quart over. Overfilling the oil can do bad things to your engine, aeration and bubbles forming in the oil from the crankshaft thrashing around in it, and can throw too much oil on your cylinder walls, cause carbon and maybe make your piston rings stick, and foul your plugs, among other nasty things. Better not to overfill.
