Question Cone filter install??

hey everyone the noob is back with another question. I just bought a high flow cone filter for my 01 solara se with the 2.2 four, can I use the stock intake pipe for it? I looked at it today and the only thing that I see that is gonna be a problem is there are two vacume lines (I guess thats what they are. Can I just drill holes in the stock intake tube and put them in there?? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Do you have a pic of your intake tube? It would help out...also what size is the inlet? 2.5? 3? Another thing, do not get those ebay intakes especially for the solara those suck ass and on top of that I heard many people get CEL. Save yourself the trouble and try to build your own cai. Or just get a weapon R or an Injen short ram.

That's what I did.

Good Luck,
Calvin

I have a 3" inlet, and the cone filter I got is a cheap one from pep boys, it cost me 25.99 so yestarday I took the two vacume hoses off the stock air box and drilled two holes in the stock intake tube and put them in there and she runs fine, it revs alot quicker too. And it seems like it has a little better pick up but that might just be my imagination. I also took out the resinator in the exaust and put in a cheap cherry bomb turbo muffler, its louder then the stock exaust but not obnoxiously(I know I didnt spell that right, I suck at grammer ) loud its just right. Oh one more question after I installed the cone filter you can hear a ringing noise while the car is running when the hood is up, anybody know what that is? It also did it when I took the stock airbox cover off while it was running to check the air filter when I had a stock one in still. Thanks in advance everyone.

Congrads on getting it to work..about the noise if anything you should hear a hissing noise. A ringing noise would MAYBE come from the air filter hitting the frame of the car? It happen to me once so I would check if there are any scratches on the frame where the air filter is.

the noise is the sound of your engine, you just cant hear it with all the extra stock air box set up.

the ecxtra pick up is probably from an old dirty paper filter.

Thanks for all the help everyone. About the better pick up, could me cutting out the resinator and putting in pipe plus putting the cone filter in make it have better pick up, another thing I noticed is that it revs alot faster now too. Wouldnt that make the car have a little better pick up or am I totally off on that? I also just started the engine repair course at school so maybe I will learn some more tricks to get some more horse's out of my good ole' 2.2.... Oh one more thing any recomendations on what kind of oil to go with, I figure since it revs quicker now and I let the rpm's get a little higher before I shift to the next gear I should put oil in that does well with that. Thanks in advance everyone. Oh one more thing, between what rpm's does the 2.2 make the most torque and HP? I know these cars where not made for power, they where made for economy and ride but I am just curious. Thanks again, and yes I know I am a really, really, really bad speller.

everyones goin gto say mobil 1 synthetic here... for the 5s its probably good to short shit at around 5000-5500rpm or so, theres no point going any harder then that really.

i use castrol magnatec and have no problems although i might try a thinner oil next time.

Wow 5000-5500 thats pretty high, I dont think I have ever let it go past 4 grand, I was afraid that I might do some serious damage. Is it safe to let it rev that high all the time, or should I just do it when I feel the need to go fast.....LoL. Where does everyone else shift gears? When I did the oil change last I put in Castrol start up, so next oil change I will go with a synthetic oil, should I stick with the 5W 30? Thanks again everyone for the help. I dont know where I would be with all the help I get on here, I would probably of ended up doing some kind of damage to it. Oh one more thing, I wanted to make the stock shifter a little shorter so I cut some off but it wasnt enough, I want to go lower but there is a plastic piece and I need to move it down if I want to be able to cut more off but I cant get it to slide down anymore, I really didnt try that hard I wanted to find out if I did move it if it would mess something up. I was thinking I could take the shifter boot of and cut the piece off but I dont know how to get that plastic piece off, any help would be great. Sorry about the long post everyone, I tend to go on and on sometimes.

Hey everyone the noob is back with more questions, what kinda mods does the 2.2L motor like in my 01 Solara SE? I put a cone filter in the stock intake and I cut the resinator out of the exaust and welded in a pipe I also put a cherry bomb turbo muffler on it, any other mods that I could do that wont cost a small fortune like a turbo would. I am just trying to get every horse I can outta her. I know these motors where not built for speed but Im sure that I could get a couple more horses out of her. Thanks in advance.
