i was wondering if it is better to leave overdrive on when ur racing or leave it off. when i leave it off i feel like i have more torque and pickup. but when i have it on say over a certain speed it feels like it moves faster. i know that when its on it just lets it go into 4th gear tho. im just interested to see what every1 does and if someone might have times at the track of when they left it on and off. o and i drive a 2000 solara V6. thanks
Overdrive is just a toggle switch for 4th gear.
Turn it off and you disable 4th gear. Turn it on and your car will use 4th gear for cruising (this is good as it saves gas).
So in summary... no, you won't gain any power by leaving overdrive on or off.
Unless you have trap speeds over 120mph, you won't be using 4th gear in a drag race.
Rev to about 4-5k in 3rd then hit OD so you're not stuck in a low RPM in 4th gear.
Once you do that, you'll notice you'll actually feel more pull from it than anything.
Most of the O/D transmissions WITH the ECT on (for later shifts) don't shift into 3rd gear until 105mph. You also will loose time shifting into 4th. There are pleanty of revs left in 3rd to accelerate (if you can make the hp to pull it)
The shifting pattern itself is identicle.

yes, but if you rev past where you should with 3rd, it'll shift later and set you up at a higher rpm once you shift (better acceleration), which is my point.
It's highly unlikely for any camry without FI, or n2o will *ever* get close to needing to shift into 4th on a 1/4 mile. So it's not needed at all. Same thing MrRavenX said.
A v6 with a sub 100 shot of n2o should trap low 100's.

Hmmm, this brings up a question for me. I wonder if I'll be hitting my overdrive gear this year at the track. I've always left the OD off when racing but that is correct, it doesn't make any difference because in a 1/4 mile drag, you'll never hit the trap speed to require it. What that means is your RPMs will still be low enough at the end of the 1/4 that it wouldn't require a shift from 3rd to 4rth. WIth a sc running the 2.2" pulley and ~100 shot of N20, I wonder if I'll get there. -JoeB

Hmmm...
You're gonna have to leave the OD on.

The dyno may tell the answer.
Go for it. See you there. Jr wants me to race with you guys @ MIR. Perhaps.
Will be interesting finally comparing times/speeds between the Solaras.

Thanks for the link Rizal. Great to see you here Dave! I think I'll see you again today and again at the track. I can't wait to see what your monster does!
So to wrap up the OD, I would say, leave it on. It won't make a difference at WOT. A lot of times when I'm driving around on the street, I'll leave the OD off just to keep it in higher RPMs to get a more torqy responsive pedal! It's more fun that way. -JoeB
