Yet another new one to the board.
Hello!
What brings me here? Pure ignorance - and the ralization that I don't know a thing, yet.
My fist car was the old hand-me-down, my brother in Law's old 92 toyota tracell. That thing never died (280 thousand miles, 100k of which were mine, before the engine caught fire in a spectacular and glorious death). I was so impressed with it's longlevity with propper maintinance that I vowed I'd get another one.
Three years and an enlistment in the Marine corp's later I finally could afford my own vehicle so I found a pre certified 2002 Toyota Echo with 50k on the milage for around 10.5 (which I have been told was a decent deal). This was July/August of this year.
Now in the last three years, I've picked up the performace driving bug, or rather... the desire to pick up the performance driving bug. I've played the Grand Turismo games, I've watched the movies and obsessed over the initial D anime series - and about four hours ago I spun the little "Roller Skate" (as my roomate calls it) off the road and messed up my rear alignment something fierce (she is down at the dealership getting a check up as we speak). She is still drivable, but it's probably going to run me a bit (thank god for insurance) toget it back up and running...
Which brings me here... I realized, that it's one thing the hear about and watch some of those cool things, and BS with the buddies about how you're going to do this and that with car, but this little event made me realize, I don't know Sh* about my car or what I can do (or how to do) with it.
Moment of clarity realized - So rather than stay in the land of posers and numb nutz I thought I'd go out, ask for some help, and educate myself on whether or not this (Tuning, technical driving, etc...) is something I want to actually get into.
So I'll lurk the boards here and see what I can figure out,
But, I was wondering if there were any begginer guides out there I could get my hands on or some books down at barns and Noble I can pick up to start learning about this wonderfull hobby. If it helps, I have zero technical knowledge about cars, and my true driving experience is limited to the analog controll sticks on my play station 1 console. In simple terms, I have no idea even how to change out the oil in my car, I have no idea the specs of my vehicle (all I can find is prices and where it's available to purchase with google) and due to today's little incident, I can't drive.
Since I know I am at ground zero, where is the right place to start?
Oh, and Hi, and thanks ahead of time.
-Justin
