New to forum -- Camry Owner

Hi. I have a 95 Camry LE and for the past year, it has been doing this very strange thing. It started out like this: I would be driving on a highway and would have to come to a stop at a traffic light when all of a sudden, it would start idling very low and I would have to put it in neutral and rev the engine so it wouldn't die out. It would only do it on the highway. My father and brother are BOTH mechanics but of course, every timeI went home to visit, the car would never do it. Nevertheless, they kept replacing this or that (fuel filter and a whole bunch of other stuff that I can't recall). I took it to the Toyota dealership in here in Austin and they said it was the timing belt which they adjusted but of course, it kept doing it. Now, finally, it is doing it all the time.... in town, on the highway, cold, hot but I keep driving away! My bro thinks it is the Idle control assembly (or something like that). Has anyone ever had this problem and do you think that is what it is? I'm so sick of not being able to get it fixed!

Problem #2: Ever since I have owned this car (I swear it's jinxed), there has been a "knocking" coming from the back right hand corner (passenger side back seat area). Yes, I have taken every single thing out of the truck and it still does it. My dad replaced the strut/shock (whatever a Camry has) b/c we thought it was that, but it still does it. It makes me even more crazy than problem #1. Any thoughts?

I really want to get rid of this car but can't until I fix it. Thanks for any input.

Gayle

Hi Gayle! Welcome to TN from a fellow car gal and proud 95 owner.

As for your first problem, check out your egr valve. It's part of you idle air control and sometimes it sticks causing the car to idle very rough and (on mine) stall. PM me if you want more info on that.
As for your 'knocking' sound in the back, it may be your control arm. Sometimes the bushing goes and when you go over a bump or such it makes a 'knocking' sound. If you jack up the car on the side of the noise and shake the tire (back and forth) and hear the sound, it's probably the control arm. Until you get it fixed, don't do any high-speed driving. And to cure the 'knocking' that's driving you nuts, just crank your music. Hope that helps a bit.

Oh, and what color is your 95?
