my crazy path to yotas
i used to be a big time honda guy, into civic hatchbacks, and used track my 98 DX. then my roommate got into nissans and i started surfing nissans sites, was thinking about a 240SX. while on freshalloy someone was talking about a Cressida, how its RWD, cheap, looks good lowered on vip type wheels, etc etc. so i started looking into Cressidas and one night typed "Chaser" into google and it was over. the pages and images, and everything i read about JZX81s, JZX90s etc sold me on the platform.
I started to surf the Yahoo Cressida group and someone listed a 1990 with a BHG to be parted out (surprise surprise). Well I talked him out of the car for $800 (got to love that 7m, you can get GREAT cars for pennies). it had 140K and EVERYTHING worked. well there was a problem, the car was in a Nebraska and I live in Arizona. I thought about trucking it, quotes ranged from $800-1000. I thought I could save money by just driving up there and fixing the BHG and driving it back. Long story short, we began fixing the BHG in the guys barn while it was 12 degrees and snowing, I never worked on a Toyota in my life. It worked; 12 hours later we were on the icy roads driving home in my new Cressida. It only cost me $600 in expenses. So I didn't really save any money, but the memories were worth it.
Anyway, fell in love with the car. Drove it until the 7m started to act up again (4000 miles and 2 mons later). Ordered a JZX81 Chaser clip and began the madness. So right now, it has a 1JZ-GTE, R154 5-speed, MA70 diff, Kei Office coilovers, and a whole list of other things that sound cool and have funny Japanese names.
Well the Toyota bug bit me and I sold my Civic daily driver for a clean 2002 IS300 5-speed. The more I drive these cars, the more I like them. Now I have my eye on my roommates 77K 1977 Celica GT.
Anyway, that’s my story. -brian
