2005 Tacoma saved from Crusher
Wow. I think I pulled in the deal of a lifetime. Tacoma Cobalt blue standard 2wd 2.7 9464 miles It still has the stickum on the back window from the dealer temp plate. Carfax said it was owned for 7 months. So far I have spent less than $2000. including the title processing and towing. ($250.)
needs some work: drivers side fender, qtr needs to be banged out, headlight, tailight, mirror, and paint. It's amazing how it got so beat up. It was a BLIND BID at the local City Hall. They ran an ad in the paper 3 weeks previous. The "bandits" (towing agency) had literally thrown crap all over it, and almost ruined the interior, by climbing in and out in muddy storage lot. They said it was JUNK, and said "don't waste your time", and they had no keys. They also had an unbelievable story about pulling it off the crusher. The tires were flat, the interior was literally blackened from the junkyard dirt. At City Hall, they make you sign a "participant" sheet, and I was the only bidder, keep in mind they had about 100 cars, mostly ready for the scrap heap. I called into City Hall a couple of hours before the bids were opened to see if anyone else signed the sheet. Yes. 2 other bids. The lady was very nice and said I could call back after the bids were opened. I did. I found out later the "Bandits" put in bids, but they were a little more greedy than I.
They had a wild story about not having the key, but when I looked under the hood, and saw that everything was brand new, with good fluids, I had no problem bidding w/out starting it. Winning the bid took a couple of trips between City Hall and the Bandits. City Hall takes their cut, and the Bandits take theirs. Naturally, you have to get a release from the Bandits, which only take cash for their share, and a release for title from City Hall, who also takes a cut of the final bid. I was able to obtain a $140.title within minutes. AAA wouldn't tow, so I cut a deal with the Bandits, for $100. Got it home. My girlfriend thinks I am a nut. It was covered in Sh_t. In a few minutes, and 3 garbage cans of sh_t, I power washed it off.
By the end of the day I got a $10. key made at Toyota. I jumped it and it started. AC works like new. When I saw the ODO light up, I flipped out!!
