My tacomas story

Actually it is my second 2005+ Tacoma. Have an interesting story about the first one.
Bought a 2005 Tacoma Double cab, 6 sp manual, Desert sand Mica, off road (OG), running lights (RL), side curtain air bag (CY). JBL audio (EJ) in July, 2005. The day before Thanksgiving I was heading to a ski resort about 1.5 hours from my house when I rolled the truck two and a half times. I had just come out of a canyon area into a valley, the Valley was really foggy. I was doing about 55 in a 65 mph zone coming around a large sweeping turn. My friend and I noticed a van rollover, looked at each other then the truck rear end just slid out and we did a 180. Now were going about 50 mph sliding backwards toward a van that had rolled over. I noticed the police were there and then saw people running from us. The shoulder of the road had a nice downward slope to it and when the truck left the road we rolled. I remember seeing the gravel on the shoulder then seeing frozen grass in the windshield. Then I remember my hands getting jerked forward off the steering wheel toward the dash. Then all the sudden I was sucked back into the seat. About that time something hit me in the head and I went out. When I awoke (it was only a few seconds) we just had stopped moving. A cop ran over to us and made sure we were ok. We crawled out of the upside down truck and I was just trying to figure out what had just happened when the cop starts yelling run for your life. I turn to see a Semi truck sliding sideways for us. The Semi missed us by about 100 ft and went off the other side of the road. We had missed hitting the rolled over van by about 10 ft. When I go skiing I keep my ski boots in the cab of the truck to keep warm. When we rolled a boot struck me in the head and I ended up getting 10 staples to close the wound. I had two other passengers in the truck, one in the front passenger seat and one in the back seat behind the passenger. Both passengers had minor scratches. Mostly from the side air bag going off, Needless to say, the truck was totaled. I believe the BFGoodrich Rugged Trail T/A tires were the cause of the accident. Don’t get me wrong, I take full responsibility for the accident but those tires are crap in ice and snow. I have driven this same road every weekend for fifteen years in Toyota trucks in the worst conditions imaginable and never had a problem.
I now have a 2006 Tacoma Double cab, 5 sp auto, Desert sand Mica, off road (OG), running lights (RL), side curtain air bag (CY). JBL audio (EJ), Tow package (TO), Vehicle Stability Control (VE). I put a set of Michelin X-ice on the 06 for winter. Now with the snow tires and VSC this truck is great on the snow and ice.

Holy crap! Glad you are okay, and everyone else. It might have beenthe tires, but with a van rolled over right in front of you and a semi losing control right after it might not have been your fault really, just some weird allignment in the road. I remember watching a video not to long ago of a tunnel cam in Europe somewhere, every car that went around this one turn in the tunnel lost control and crashed, about 18-20 cars in total did this. It was INSANE. Maybe thats what happened there! Glad to see you got a new truck, old one looks a little crunchy.

So do you plan on keeping your ski boots in the cab with you next time?

I just bought an 06, access cab, TRD-off road package, 6-spd manual. Living in Colorado and planning on doing a lot of skiing, those BFG scare the crap out of me. I put the Michelin X-ice tires on my 91 acura and it handled great in the snow. I was thinking of adding the same tires to the truck....after reading your story....I am no longer thinking of doing it, but am going to definitly do it. Since I plan on getting new rims as well, I will just mount the ice tires on the stockers.

Glad to hear you survived the accident with only minor injuries. After reading your story I expected the truck to look a lot worse.
