helping out my uncle

hi whats up everyone? my name is chris, i joined this forum to help my uncle out cause he's having problems with his corolla...he has a 2000 corolla...i'm not sure which model, sorry but i could find out if its necessary, but heres the problem....one night after leaving work the car just started feeling like it was going to stall while driving, but never did, he has an automatic, so at first i thought maybe it had something to do with the cable that goes to the transmission, cause it looked like it was loose, so i told him to leave his car at his job and that i'd take him home...luckily my mechanic is right by his job so the next day i drove it to my mechanic, which someone followed me from behind to help me out, well the car could only do like 20-30 mph, and thats not on the jump..i mean it SLOWLY got there!!! and if i had to go up a hill it was really scarey!!! i mean if i didn't have someone following me i would of gotten into an accident...anywho...now my mechanic checked it out did a lot of test...and he is a really good mechanic...i'd swear by my car and reccomend him to anyone, anywho well he did some test, fuel test (make sure things are not clogged or whatever) came out fine, compression test (came out fine as well), then he checked the codes to see maybe it was gonna say something, but nothing, then the next day he did some more test, let the car run for like 20 mins...checked under the car, saw that the catalyic converter was turning red..so he took off the cat and the exhaust to see if it would at least run right without it, and still it ran like crap...so obviously that wasn't the problem, then he checked the codes again, but this time it said it was mis-firing, but even those its mis-firing, the car shouldn't run like it is, i mean if someone was to race me by foot they'd beat me!! anywho the last conclusion that he could come up with is the ECU, but he said even that wouldn't be 100%....so have anyone of you expierenced the same problem? or have any suggestions? please let me know!! thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =)

At first I thought it might be the tranny not shifting but I guess not. How does the engine do with it in park or nuetral? Does it rev normally? When driving, does the engine rev up and the car just not pick up speed or does it just seem bogged down?

yea i thought it was the tranny too, but my mechanic said it wasn't either...anywho when in park or nuetral it revs weird, like its reving BUT its short no popping sound though, and when driving the engine doesn't not rev up, it just seems bogged down like you're basically putting it in drive and its picking up by its own...got anything else in mind? thank you for your help
