New to Toyota Nation
Hey gang, new Toyota owner here in Baltimore, Maryland. My Dad recently gave me his 87 Xtra Cab 4x4 because he put a new engine in it and after a few months, it ran like @?!!. It was dumping oil in the carb from the breather tube.
I came to this website looking for answers and found some very useful info. I managed to keep the truck running by disconnecting the breather tube and spraying oil all over the engine bay, but none was going into the carb!
A friend of mine has a guy he takes his 93 Toyota truck to, so I popped in and he told me I had a dead cylinder. # 3 to be exact. He told me the rings were likely siezed, which is the same thing I read in here. He suggested a junkyard motor, since it would be much cheaper than a rebuild. I picked up a 22R engine from a junkyard in Dundalk. They popped it into the bed of my 3 cylinder Toyota and I was headed for my dad's house to swap the motors out. Along the way the engine overheated and left me stranded on the side of the highway. I felt like a jackass! Blown engine in front, with the new (used) one sitting in the bed!
After an embarrasing tow truck ride to my dad's house, we spent the next couple days swapping intakes and exhausts, carbs, oil pans, etc. The engine's in and runs pretty good for a $325 junkyard motor. I've got a few other things to do to the truck, but I have no complaints.
I will complain about the place that sold my dad and brother the alleged "New Engine".
RITCHIE AUTOMOTIVE in Reisterstown Maryland ripped my dad off to the tune of about $2500.00 for what they said was a new engine. With less than 100 miles on it, the engine overheated due to a defective head. After much heated debate, they finally agreed to replace the head, but not the entire motor. Then, with less than 1000 miles on it, there's too much pressure in the top of the motor, due to the piston rings in the #3 cylinder. If that's not bad enough, when they swapped the motor out, they broke the lines for the A/C and denied any responsibility for it.
Word to the wise:
DO NOT DO BUSINESS with
RITCHIE AUTOMOTIVE!!!!!!!
