2001 Sienna owner

Hi, my name is Carl. I have a 2001 Sienna that has given me great problems, and I have found fixes through my local shop. First - if you have K&N air filters, the mass air flow sensor gets loaded with oil, and causes engine problems. Knock sensors, ignition coil, Chk Engine Light, bad mileage, fuel pump failure or very low pressure, power, starting and acceleration trouble. Remove the K&N to start, and you may have to replace all the above items to fix the trouble. My van runs like new again. Of course it took ten days and $2200 to do that...

The only reason that would happen is if you over oiled the K&N filter. I can't tell you how many times I have seen that problem happen here on on friends cars. i have a K&N and I have not had a problem with it in years. Glad to hear than everything is running great again, to bad for that repair bill. Welcome to TN!!!

Thanks, but I am scared off K&N for good to the tune of $2500!! I was very careful to follow the specs when cleaning and recharging the filter, and thought it looked like I was UNDER-oiling them. This is not an isolated incident - the shop tech read about the problem in a tech tips magazine for technicians, so it has happened frequently enought to get into print. I have asked the shop owner to get me a copy of that article.

I never got into the modified filter thing. You would be amazed at the strange problems it creates. Just had a mazda come in today that wouldnt run. A small peice of coating from the wire mesh on the filter came off and shorted out the mass airflow sensor. Best part was it didnt even throw a code. But anyway, as far as toyotas go siennas seem to be a little more problematic but you should be able to get plenty of help on here. Welcome to the site!
