'85 FJ60 w/ Possible Fuel Starvation Problem

So, I'm slowly bringing this truck back to life. Purchased a year ago. Had to have it towed from the previous owner's site, and immediately to a Transmission shop (new Clutch installed). Brought home, and parked it (June '06).

Finally, scraped together enough money to pay the (past-due) California DMV fees, put insurance on it, and tried to drive it. Now, the fun begins (June '07)...

> Running rough...

1) Replaced nasty-looking fuel filter (simple, right).

> Still running horrible...

2) So I took it to the local Toyota dealership, on a Saturday morning, for a tune-up. The young mechanics were pretty stoked about seeing my "Pig", but not a one knew the first thing about servicing it. Had to wait until Monday for the "old-timer" to have a look at it. The news was all very bad. Estimated repairs would be over $3,000! OEM paarts and new dealership shop-rates can add up fast...

*** Downey Toyota (a Penske subsidary) is one dealership you can trust - the Service Mgr. (Jim) went above and beyond the call of duty in helping me out - would not even charge me for the time spent looking at this disaster, and giving me a lot of answers (typically, this is almost $300).

3) Local General Repair shop; replaced a thouroughly rotted-out Fuel Tank and Sending Unit (note; always replace the sending unit when you replace the tank - it saves you an extra trip, more delays, and headaches). Spector Off-Road provided both (another salvation for those hoping to keep their FJ's alive).

> Still running like junk (bucking like a young Mustang let loose in the field).

4) Local Carb shop; rebuilt the entire carb - it looks like new. Drove it 50 feet to the Smog Test shop - and found the #5 cylinder down a bit, compared to the rest. And, the emissions are too bad to pass. While the bucking disappeared, a new problem cropped up - it feels as if the fuel is not getting to the carb. So, back it went to the Carb shop, and the Fuel Pump was replaced.

> Same fuel "starvation" issue re-appeared.

5) Carb shop will look at it, again. They suggested I leave the Gas Cap off (in the meantime) - to see if there is a possibilty of too much pressure.

> The symptoms;

A) Driving at about 30 to 35mph... 2000rpm... distinct drop in power... enough to cause me to pull to the curb, and wait for the problem to disappear (about 10 seconds > +/-). Tachometer shows engine almost dying out, but if you depress the clutch (take away any demand on the engine) it seems to alleviate the "starvation".

B) Problem does not usually appear until after the truck has been driven more than 20 to 30 minutes (engine is warm).

C) Starts up everyday, without any hesitation.

D) Typical ambient temperatures are in the 80's.

Notes;

Have yet to replace plugs, wires, vacuum lines (bought all new hose), etc. I'm sure some/all of this is playing a part in it. I did put a "fuel cleaner" additive in it, per mechanic's recommendation (not completely run through). The fuel mileage is horrific (not even 10mpg).

If anyone has some insight, as to how I can remedy this situation, I would greatly appreciate it. Chastise me, berate me for not doing other things first - it doesn't matter. I'd just like to get this beast halfway decent.

Thanks, in advance, for your advise...
