The side gear shaft according to Haynes and the Toyota manual is aka the
intermediate shaft, left or right side.
This shaft is the "intermediate" connection between the CV (Constant
Velocity) Axle and the transmission itself = CV axle to intermediate or side
gear shaft to the tranny (three parts total).
I am dealing with the left (driver) side which after consulting with the
internet and a respected general auto mechanic friend the conclusion is as
follows.
1. A slide hammer can be used
2. A pry bar can be used
3. Two large standard screwdrivers can be used (mechanic's choice)
4. A 2 foot crowbar can be used (my choice)
used to simply and easily pry the intermediate shaft out.
I suggest that you have an oil pan underneath the pry area because tranny
fluid will spill.
The parts you will need to replace are in any manual: seal, dust cover, snap
ring, shaft, transmission fluid, cv axle, as required.
However, you will not damage the tranny by prying off the side gear shaft.

Any questions that I can answer, I will or I will try and send you in the right
direction.
