catalytic converter ?? 2000 camry 4cyl

Hi, never tried a forum before but sure could use your expertise. I have a 2000 Camry (4 cyl) Japanese made w/California emission system. The flex pipe on the catalytic converter pipe is cracked and so I've been shopping. Alas!! Toyota wants $1,050 for the part. They tell me I can not use one with the federal emissions rating. THey promise me I'll need to come crawling back to them after I waste several hundred dollars on a converter that will keep my car from passing inspection because the check engine light will be on and that that may be the least of my problems. Has anyone put an aftermarket catalytic converter on their car without a problem? (Seems I can find these for about $250 - 350)
