I purchased a 98 2.7L a/t Tacoma prerunner a cupla days ago. i was adusting loose throttle cables this am & discoverd some cut wires going to a black box on the drivers inner fender. it has/had vacuum lines going to it... WTF?
It did pass emissions yesterday.

What is the ETC button for in the cab?

It has TRD decals on the rear quarters. What identifies a real TRD.

I have a Tacoma 4x4 with a 2.7ltr, but it's a manual trans. I think the ETC is Extra Traction Control or something of the like. Check out the Tacoma Truck section . Those guys over there know thier stuff. I'm sure they can help you.

Dean, pics of the cables and black box will help what you're describing. As for the ECT button, when turned on it changes the shift points in the tranny to higher RPMs to give you more passing power or when towing. The only way to tell if you really have the TRD package is to look for a button that says "RR DIFF LOCK". It should be above your left knee, it's used to lock the rear differential. Not sure if you really have the TRD package because IIRC, the package was first available in 2000, but I could be wrong.
