Toyota family

My family currently owns 5 Toyota and has had more in the past, all living long, productive lives.

But I'm now less keen on my '98 Tacoma 4X4 (6 cyl) (300,000 kms). Recently it's started using twice as much gas as usual but runs fine. I replaced the fuel and air filters, spark plugs and plug wires. The garage says the oxygen sensors are fine. There's no check engine light so Toyota can't analyse it. They mentioned that changing the timing belt might make a difference but that's a lot of work and $ to do on spec.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.
