Tire size change

Hi All:
This is my first time here so excuse me if I don't make any sense in my writing or wording > I'm not good at it. I own er.....(leased) a 2006 Toyota Matrix and am from Nova Scotia.
I would like to know if anyone out there brought a different size tire than the original that came with your Matrix?
I am hoping to buy 4 winter tires fot my 2006 Matrix, the orginal ones being a huge rim size - 215/50R17. I am hoping to get 4 new rims and tires, but don't know what size to change to ????? Any answers out there???
