I own an ancient 1987 Toyota Camry with over 200,000 miles on it, and lots of problems and quirks.
- Bent up hood from a collision with a power pole
- Burgundy passenger fender (replaced after the above collision). The rest of the car is blue (except for the primer)
- Primered rear quarter panel (I sanded off some rust)
- Leaks oil like a sieve. I go through about a quart every 2-3 weeks
- Trunk lid won't stay up by itself. It will slam down hard if you don't watch out!
- Screwed up tape deck, everything sounds muffled. Also, the antenna is nonexistant
It still gets great gas mileage (about 30-33 mpg), and runs fairly decently. I'm just afraid its gonna fall apart someday pretty soon. It's been the family car since it was first made, starting with my grandparents, my parents, my brother, and now me...
I do all the maintenance on it myself, but I'm no mechanic. It barely passed smog this year and I have a feeling it won't be seeing the next smog test (unless I do some serious work on it). I plan on retiring this poor old car as soon as I can afford something a little better.
I myself am a college student, planning to transfer to UC Davis in 2009 to finish my BS in computer science. In my spare time, I like to read books, listen to music, and write computer programs, among other geeky things. Car repair, unfortunately, is not one of my favorite things to do. In fact, I'd rather ride a bike than drive.
I look forward to participating in this forum!
