Hello! I'm a new member of the forum from San Diego. I have a 1988 Tercel, which I've somehow managed to keep alive, and the members of my family own lots of Toyotas.
Although I've done a number of repairs on family vehicles when necessary, I have no formal training in auto mechanics. I generally only work on my car when something is broken. My academic background is in physics and biology. At work I often have to fix computers and robots in a biotech lab.
I like what EKam said in the General Postings Suggestion thread. This summarizes my own experience pretty well:

A true enthusiast ought to have a working knowledge of his/her car, and cars in general. When encountering a problem where there seems to be no readily available answer, use the knowledge you obtained and common sense to see if you can find a solution. I have a purely academic background with no formal trainning in auto mechanics or any related field. Yet, I have done more work on my car than most, and I'm willing to take a chance on most problems I encounter, and for the most part have been able to resolve them.
