USA Are there any other women here who like to work on cars?

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this group. I was looking up info in google about my car. 2000 Toyota Sienna XLE. I came across this forum. At first I would just browse, and all the info I found was very useful. So I decided to join. So are there any other females here who like to work on cars. I think that the autozone and advanced auto parts guy freaked out. Because instead of my husband asking questions, or talking about cars it was me. I do not know why but we as women are severly underestimated. Since I was a teenager I loved going to the junk yards, piecing something back together. Wanting to know how it works. And the best part they sell those nitrile gloves so we dont even get our hands dirty woo hoo! So I guess we women can do it all.... even wrench on a car!

Thankyou for taking the time to read my intro.

Hey Mooraja!

We must be a rare sort haha. I'm new here too. I saw the intro thread and thought this was an appropriate place to post ^_^

The parts shop looks are annoying at best but you do get used to them.
I also really like wrenching. I get so excited when I can make something work again and most times, it works better than it did before! I don't mind getting my hands dirty for that - there is so much satisfaction and it becomes almost an addiction. That's when you know you've been bit by the bug I'm sure you know the feeling!

Fixing them is only half the fun! The other part is driving on your own empowerment! Such an awesome feeling, especially with a Toyota haha.

Welcome to you even though I'm new (here) too...

aww cj thanks for the nice words. actually my hubby has NO CLUE about cars except gas do the oil changes. I remember in the early marriage days. his power steering was wacked and he took it to the mechanic. I told him exactly what was wrong and what needed to be replaced before the mechanic even looked at it. turns out I was right. Also the empowerment of knowing that we are not so naive to let them charge us 600 bucks to change a starter. I asked the mechanic what does it have gold in it. take it off and put the other starter in and told him to cut his labor hours down. Because we both know he wasnt under there very long.

I would totally agree with you. I never thought I would drive a mini van I crenched at the thought. But now that hubby got it I love it. Im very lucky to have hubby as well. Because he sees the intrest I have and actually asks me questions. Im not a mechanic by any means. I just know somethings. But believe me if I could go back to school all over again. Definately would be a mechanic LOVE IT!

Haha yay for gender role reversal! Haha it's awesome that you knew exactly what was going on. When I first started, I wanted to get to a place where I could tell what was wrong with a car just by hearing it. Once I got there, I was so happy! I love listening to cars on the road - especially the tuned ones. OMG $600 for a starter swap? In my 1st gen MR2 I could change it out in 15 minutes! It was just two bolts! And the starter cost - what $150? I miss that car...

That's awesome though, it sounds like now he takes your word for it and seeks your advise and input ^_^

And don't knock mini vans! I actually like the Odyssey (it has a very nice history one of my favorites next to the miata's story) I like the japanese tuned van and wagon scene haha I think it's so cool!

Plus! You don't have to go to school to be considered a mechanic in my eyes! All the stuff I've learned is through forums, tech articles in magazines, research, and EXPERIENCE - doing and helping friends out with their cars Haha it's way too fun to charge people for. I just charge for the price of parts and have fun learning!

haha yep that mechanic thought I was dumb. It was an american car and beleive me starters do not cost that much for them. I always loved the sienna and the odysey. But in my search they were saying they had issues. Plus my van we got from Dh ( dear husband's) boss so we got it for way less then what would have paid for it. Besides giving it a huge detailing job. The carpet was trashed and me popping the dent out in the bumper and fixing the timing belt and water pump those two go hand in hand. It has been a great deal. Except now all those stupid sensor are going out so I am trying to figure where to go next. Nothing more annoying then that CEL light ughh.
