Newbie from Iowa

I have seen what some people have done with Tacomas and FJ Cruiser and it has sparked my interest. I am looking for a dependable, decent MPG, off road Truck/SUV to have some fun with down the road.

to the nation! What kind of off-roading do you do, which might help to narrow down a choice of the Tacoma, FJ, or perhaps even another truck or SUV? Which criteria are most important to you?

My only off road experience has been in Humvees when I was in the Marine Corps, in Iraq and North Carolina, most beach and sand dunes. I'm just looking for some ideas to handle, snow, sand, and trails to shooting ranges, nothing to extreme.

Okay, that narrows it down. Since you mentioned MPG as being important, I'd throw out to you that you might want to consider the Highlander. Reasons are that it gets fantastic mileage for a mid-sized SUV, which for me I average 19/20 city and 26/28 highway (depending on speed). I have extensive off-road experience with many 4x4s (almost 30 years), and even though the Highlander is AWD it takes me to 95% of the places I need to go. Anyway, just throwing that option out there for consideration.
