My 16 year old son just spent every cent he has in the world on a 1987 Toyota 4X4 pickup truck. He wants to start working on it and I am advising him to register for this web site so the community can help him get to know his truck. I am registering as well so that I can help. I hope I don't drive him crazy.
I also have a 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid. So far i have been too scared to touch it myself and the Toyota dealer has been doing a great job.
Looks like your son got a great truck, those things are practically bulletproof. My dad had an '82 in great shape and ran like a champ.... that is until some a-hole decided to broadside him when she ran a red light. So how do you like your Camry? Anyhoo, feel free to browse around and contribute where you can.
We are just downloading the Factory Service Manual for the truck now. The first job is to fix the passenger door lock. Right now you have to roll down the window and open the door from the outside. Apparently there is a big sheet of plastic blocking the mechanism.
I like the Camry Hybrid. It has lots of power from the electric engine and it rides well.
Welcome to the forum. I love those older trucks, although I'd prefer an 85 or older being as they had the straight axles, but the 87 is still a solid truck. I can still remembers when they were new.
Anyway, as someone who was around back in the day, if you need anything, information, have questions, advice, etc, don't hesitate to contact me. I am usually in here just about every day.
FYI, I offer TN members 30% off MSRP on genuine Toyota OEM parts should you need them. I only charge actual shipping costs plus $1.00 - $2.00 for materials, etc. But whether you buy from me or not, don't hesitate to contact me if you need anything. It isn't all about a parts sale for me. You will see as you figure your way around and some of the other members will tell you, I'm sure, at least I hope .
Anyway, welcome to the forum and tell your son, and yourself, congratulations on your Toyota purchases.
Can we remove door lock without taking out the glass?
Thanks Gary. Your friendly attitude is why I am encouraging my son to get involved. I have some old Internationals and we have all helped each other a lot on those over the years.
The first problem we are working on with the truck is the passenger door lock. It opens from the outside but not the inside. We took the door cover off and all the linkages are connected. It looks like we may need a new door lock. Do you know if we can remove the door lock without taking out the glass? The manual is not clear about this.
Okay, so it works from the outside but not the inside. That means that either the lock needs to be replaces or, we need to check all connections. If memory serves me there are three or fou rods to that lock, one for the up and down lock, one for the inner handle, one for the outer handle, and one for the lock cylinder. So it becomes a process of elimination. I know the outer handle works, but can you lock and unlock using the key and/or the inner button? If the answere is yes, then we narrow it down to the connection from the inner handle to the lock.
If we do that, then we need to check that the rod is attached to the inner handle which is done by a plastic clip that oftern breaks. I can't remember what color it is but it may be yellow, ivory or white or even pink or blue. Sorry, it's been a while. If it is connected you need to check the handle to see when pulling it the rod is actually moving or not. Here is where it may get fun, if it is moving, you have to see if it actually moving the lock part. If not, there may be a spring on that rod missing or damaged, or the rod itself is bent and not moving all the back and forth.

Gary, All of the connections are there but when the inside lever is pulled the lock does not release as it does from the outside. Watching the lock mechanism it appears to be not functioning correctly. I am wondering if we can pull the lock out from inside the door without removing the glass? This is not clear from the factory service manual.
I am pretty sure you do have to remove the glass. Even if you didn't it is pretty tight in there even with it out, and it shouldn't be that big of a deal to take it out.
