Intro owner of 1989 Camry LE 4-Cyl
In 1999 we bought a 1989 Camry for my wife to drive.
Now she has a van, so I am giving up my 1994 Plymouth Acclaim V6 w/110,000 miles and keeping the Camry w/198,500 miles for me to drive. I've always liked the Camry, but it is kind of tough to go from a 6-cylinder to a 4-cylinder engine. It has better suspension, better steering and feels more solid than the Plymouth in my opinion.
For the past several years she has declined my offers for maintenance, upkeep, and repairs (planning to get rid of it).
A few months ago it ran low on oil and spun one rod bearing. I replaced that bearing from underneath and it's doing ok. There's a little bit of side-to-side movement in the rod and this knocks from time to time, but I'm using it until something drastic happens.
I am doing a bit of refurbishing to make up for a couple of years of delayed upkeep. All the speakers are shot, replaced a tie rod end, wheel bearing, and stabilizer bar bushing. It probably needs front struts, and maybe a few other things up front since there are a few rattles there.
After that, there are some rattles and noises in the rear suspension. Finally there are some rust spots to conquer on the hood, front fender, rear fender, and door post.
As a bonus, I would like to replace some of the brittle broken plastic trim interior pieces.
I am trying to decide the best arrangement for my subwoofers. My old box was a custom built-in-place so I have to make a new one no matter what. I hope to balance having the speakers (I *need* them) with having usable trunk space. I fold down the seats and use it a lot for hauling 10' and 12' items. On occasion I remove the rear & front seats and haul items up to 16 feet. Who needs a truck?
If the engine fails I will have to decide whether I am going to rebuild it, replace it, or swap with a 3SGE or 3SGTE.
