noise when engaging reverse

Hi TN, I have an 07 corolla with 40k miles and it just started to make a tinny clunk noise when I engage reverse after it has sat for a couple of hours. I warm up the car put it in reverse and it seems to engage just fine briefly and then "Pang" it makes the noise. It sounds like it is coming from the tranny (automatic) or the drivers side CVJ. It won't do it again unless it has rested. I have searched TN and found a couple of similar posts but they were newer cars and they fixed themselves. New cars are amazing. I took it to the dealership and they couldn't reproduce the sound so I recorded it and they said they couldn't diagnose it from the recording. I think the wheels have to be on the ground for it to happen so you can't put it on a lift and listen to it. Thanks.

Hello to you too, and welcome to Toyota Nation! I don't have an answer myself to your reverse noise, and if your search didn't turn up any relevant threads I'd say go ahead and post up a new one to the Corolla forum and see if the other owners have experienced that or have an answer. I had a TR7 once that did something similar--I had to engage the clutch and wait about 5 seconds before putting it into reverse, or else have the gears grind --and I attributed it to a flywheel problem. I ended up living with that 5 second irritation instead of trying to fix it, especially since it was a Triumph.
